I firmly believe some of the best gifts are food. There isn’t a single neighbor, coworker or Grinch that doesn’t enjoy a fresh batch of cookies or sweets during the holidays. These hot chocolate sticks with marshmallows grew from that idea and totally hit the spot once the cold weather rolled in.
Homemade marshmallows are a bit time consuming, but totally worth it. As someone who doesn’t even like marshmallows, take my word for it: these babies are the real deal. I used this recipe from Smitten Kitchen (and heeded her warnings about the sticky mess), cut them into cubes and tossed them in a bit more confectioners sugar.
When I drink hot chocolate, I don’t go for the watered down powder packets. If I’m going to have hot chocolate, I’m going to have hot chocolate, ya know what I mean? This combo of three chocolates (semi-sweet, milk and dark chocolate, 1 cup of each) melted together with one can (14 oz) of sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream (1/2 cup) on low heat produces that magical, rich flavor and hardens perfectly into a fudgey block that can chopped up accordingly (for a more “instant” version, try this recipe!).
Place the chocolate chunk and marshmallow cube on top of one another and spear with a stick (I picked a bunch up from Michaels!).
Wrap them up with cellophane and festive tape for friends, or simply melt into 1/2 cup-1 cup hot milk (depending on how chocolately you like it!).
